Why Is Your Vehicle Shake Every Time You Idle

Cars are built to run smoothly, whether you’re cruising down the freeway, or waiting at a stop light. Unfortunately, sometimes cars shake. Why does this happen? There are several possible reasons your car can start to shake.

If your car shakes while you drive, it could be your shocks or tires. If your car shakes when you brake, your brake system probably has a problem. Another possibility is that your tires aren’t properly balanced, or your wheels are not aligned. The fact is cars can shake while you drive for several reasons. However, why does your car shake when you come to a stop or when it’s in park?

Common Causes of Shaking

It’s not always easy to know exactly why your car shakes when you stop because there are several possibilities. These are some of the most common causes, and what you should do about them.

Try the Spark Plugs – the most common cause of engine shaking is bad spark plugs. Sparks plugs get dirty or worn out which causes them to misfire. When that happens, your engine tends to vibrate and shake when you’re idled. Changing the spark plugs will usually fix this problem.

Faulty Fuel Intake System – your engine can also vibrate or shutter when your fuel intake system is dirty or not properly adjusted. Our Downey auto technicians can fix this problem. We’ll check the intake system and the fuel pump to make sure they clean.

Timing Belt Is Bad – your engine belts – the timing belt, serpentine belt, or v-belts – can also cause engine vibration or squealing. If one or all these belts is worn out or loose, it can affect other parts. That’s what makes the loud noises and causes the shaking. Getting your belts adjusted or replaced should eliminate the shaking.

Hoses Are Worn Out or Broken – there are several hoses that help your engine function properly. When one or more of these hoses has a problem, it effects your engine, including causing it to shake. If you bring your vehicle into Glenn’s Auto Service, we’ll find the problem and fix it.

Motor Mounts Are Broken – your engine is attached to your car’s frame with motor mounts. If those mounts get broken or become loose, your engine will definitely shake. If your motor mounts are the problem, then you should get them taken care of as soon as you can.
