Most Important Winter Auto Care Services – Downey Auto Repair

Every driving season is different, including winter. Obviously, here in Downey we don’t run into some of the crazy wintery driving conditions that people in some other parts of the country do. However, if you’re driving in other places with inclement weather this winter then you need to be ready for whatever the weather might throw at you.

Driving in wintry weather is not easy, and it can get much worse if your car has any kind of issues. When the weather turns ugly, it’s always a good idea to drive with extra caution. But it’s very smart to make sure your car is ready for these nasty conditions beforehand. These are some good tips for your car care this winter.

Make Your Vehicle Safe for Winter

Coolant – there’s not much worse that can happen to your vehicle during winter than having your engine block freeze up in the extreme conditions. To protect your engine, be sure you have enough coolant and that it’s clean. Coolant/antifreeze keeps your engine running at the right temperature and prevents it from freezing or overheating. So, be sure your coolant system is at peak performance.

Lights – there’s a lot less daylight during the winter months, which means your lights get more use. So, now is a good time to check all your lights to make sure they are working right. Start with your headlights, but don’t stop there. Check your high beams, brake lights, taillights, fog lights, and blinkers. You want to be seen and be able see others.

Tires – no matter what type of tires you have on your vehicle during the winter, make sure they’re in good condition. Having a healthy tread is the key to your safety. So, make sure your tread is sufficient and that there is no uneven wear. If you need new tires don’t wait to get them replaced

Battery – cold weather can cause your car’s battery to wear down faster. So, check your battery to make sure it still holds a complete charge. A quick voltage test will tell you how it’s doing. If it’s on the weak side, then get a new one before you get stuck with a car that won’t start.

Fluids – be sure to check all your fluid levels to ensure they are ready for the winter driving season. Even your washer fluid is important because it helps keep your windshield clean. Never letting your gas tank get below half a tank is also a good practice.

Defroster – last, but certainly not least, be sure your defroster is working properly before you drive in severe winter weather. This is so important for your safety. If you can’t see clearly, you are more likely to get in an accident. Also, be sure your cabin air heating system works too, so you stay warm in your car.
