Most newer vehicles these days feature anti-lock brake systems (ABS). The ABS helps you avoid skidding uncontrollably when you brake, and it provides more steering ability while you drive. ABS first came onto the scene in the mid 1980s, but only recently did it become standard on most vehicles. What an Anti-lock Brake System Does
The great thing about ABS is that it allows you to steer your vehicle even when your brakes are engaged. That makes avoiding accidents easier in some instances. So, how does it work? ABS sensors monitor wheel speed to determine if your wheels lock up during braking. When a wheel does attempt to lock, using a series of hydraulic valves your ABS reduces how much brake force is applied. This allows you to continue controlling your steering wheel and avoid skidding.
In the past, you might have been told to pump the brakes if your vehicle starts skidding. That is true for vehicles without ABS. However, with ABS you should not pump the brakes. With anti-lock brakes you should push firmly on the brake and hold it in place if you start to skid. The Anti-lock brakes will then do their job. It will usually cause a pulsing sensation, but that is normal.
What Happens When Your ABS Quits Working?
So, what should you be looking for if your ABS is having issues? In most cases, the ABS dashboard light warning will turn on. But if that happens, don’t panic. Your vehicle will still brake. However, it does mean the anti-skid ability might not work. That means you can’t steer while your brakes are engaged and that puts you at greater risk of an accident. You might not be able to avoid another object if you try braking too close to it
