Is it Time to Replace My Car’s Suspension? – Downey Auto Repair

How’s your ride been lately? Is your vehicle still driving smooth, or have you noticed some rough patches? Maybe it’s just the roads you’ve been driving on, right? Unless you’ve changed your daily driving routes, that’s not likely. If you’re vehicle has felt bumpier recently, you might have a problem with your suspension.

Most people don’t give their suspension a second thought. But if your car, truck, crossover, or SUV starts to get a little bumpy, even on flat surfaces, then you know something must be wrong. And it’s very possible that your shocks and/or struts are worn out.

Don’t Leave Bad Suspension in Suspense

It’s pretty hard to ignore a rough-riding vehicle. But some people manage to do it. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea and we would advise against it. When you choose to ignore a problem, it will usually get worse. But what about shocks and struts, do they really need to be changed? A few extra bumps never hurt anyone, right? Wrong!

When you overlook a worn-out suspension system, you could leave yourself in danger and put more wear and tears on your car. For starters, you don’t have as much control over your vehicle when the suspension is worn. Secondly, the extra bumps are bad for your vehicle, even if they don’t bother you.

Driving with bad shocks and struts causes other problems, and your vehicle will likely experience other issues if you delay the repairs. Having good shocks and struts keeps you safer on the road and it also helps extend the life of your vehicle. So, what should you look for to determine if your shocks and struts need to be repaired or replaced? These are some common signs.

Tire Tread Is Uneven – uneven tread on your tires is a sign of bad shocks and struts. It’s not the only reason you can have uneven tread, but poor suspension can cause uneven weight distribution, which causes your tires to wear unevenly.

Vehicle Rides Rough – the most obvious sign of suspension issues is a rough or bumpy ride. Your shocks and struts are probably getting old if every road you drive on feels rougher.

Give it the Bounce Test – you can also test your suspension when your car is parked. You just need to push down on your vehicle by pressing against the hood a few times. If your car bounces several times under its own weight after you stop pushing on it, then your suspension is likely bad.

Swaying or Drifting to One Side – when your suspension functions right, your vehicle drives smoothly. However, when your shocks and struts go bad, your car might start drifting, pulling, or swaying when you drive. You probably shouldn’t operate your vehicle if this happens. You could put yourself and others in danger. So, if your vehicle starts drifting or swaying get your suspension checked.

Shocks and/or Struts Are Leaking – sometimes, all it takes is a quick inspection of your shocks and struts to determine if they need to be replaced. If they’re dirty and oily, you might have a fluid leak. If so, it’s time for some new shocks and struts.
