Explanation of Dashboard Warning Lights – What Do They Mean?

Cars have become so advanced these days, sometimes it can be hard to keep up with all the latest technology. The newest features are very convenient and can make life much easier, but it can also be daunting for some drivers to understand how to work the new technology, including all the warning signals on the dashboard.

After all, there is a lot to keep track of. Many of the dashboard warning lights are easy to understand, but others can be harder to decode. So, let’s take a closer look what these lights actually mean.

Most Common Dashboard Lights and What They Mean

Check Engine Light – the check engine light can cause immediate panic but, in most cases, it usually signifies something minor. For example, even a loose gas cap can trigger this warning light to come on. However, there are other more serious possibilities, like a bad catalytic convertor. That’s why it’s a good idea to get your vehicle tested if the check engine light does come on. When you bring your vehicle to our Downey auto repair shop, we use our diagnostic tools to determine exactly what caused the light to come on, and then we can get it fixed.

Oil Pressure Warning – if this light comes on it can be for two reasons. Either your oil pressure is low, or the sensor that controls the dashboard light is busted. Obviously, the first reason is worse than the second. If your oil pressure is low, your vehicle could have a leak, or your engine might be burning oil. The best thing to do is get it checked out right away.

Service Engine Soon – this light can come on for several reasons and it’s activated by your vehicle’s computer system. Just like the check engine light, the best way to find out what it means is to get it diagnosed with the proper equipment.

Temperature Warning Light – this light activates when your engine overheats. It’s usually because your coolant level is low. Don’t ignore this light. If it comes on, pull over and shut your car off. Failing to do so, could cause total engine failure. Let your engine cool down before checking the radiator and then add coolant or water.

Battery – if you see this light, don’t stop your vehicle because it might not start again. Bring your car into our shop to get your battery tested right away. If your battery is good, it might just be a loose wire causing the light to activate.

ABS – this light indicates an issue with your anti-lock brake system. Using a diagnostic tool, we can pinpoint the issue and fix the problem. Your brakes won’t stop working, but the ABS should be checked.

Brake Light – this usually any obvious one. Make sure the brake is disengaged. If it is, then bring your vehicle into to our shop. We’ll determine what the problem is, which could be low brake fluid or a lack of hydraulic pressure.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System – this is easy. This light means it’s time to check the air pressure in one or more of your tires. Add some air and the light should turn off.

Traction Control System – together with the anti-lock brake system, the traction control system helps stabilize your vehicle. So, if this light comes on, the triggering device has been disabled and it won’t control wheel slip. If the light stays on, then it’s time to get the code to determine the issue.
